2017 Ford Escape Spark Plug Gap & Specs

The 2017 Escape came with three gasoline engines in North America, and the spark-plug gap is not the same for all three. That is the most important thing to know before using a generic plug chart or assuming the EcoBoost and 2.5L specifications match.

Ford's published spark-plug gaps: 1.5L EcoBoost: 0.025-0.029 in (0.65-0.75 mm); 2.0L EcoBoost: 0.027-0.031 in (0.70-0.80 mm); 2.5L: 0.049-0.053 in (1.25-1.35 mm).

Ford's manual is the source for the numbers above. Replacement part numbers can be superseded over time, so verify the current Motorcraft replacement by VIN before ordering.

When does Ford say to replace the spark plugs?

For normal scheduled maintenance, Ford lists spark-plug replacement at 100,000 miles (160,000 km). The manual also has special-operating-condition schedules that call for replacement at 60,000 miles (96,000 km) for some severe-use patterns, including certain towing/car-top-carrier use and extensive idling or low-speed commercial-type driving.

Start by identifying the engine

Alice, the Escape behind this site, is an SE with the 1.5L EcoBoost. Ford's gap range for that engine is much tighter than the 2.5L specification. That is why I would identify the engine before buying plugs, checking a gap or reading a how-to article.

Symptoms that can make spark plugs worth checking

Those symptoms do not prove the plugs are responsible. Ignition coils, injectors, air leaks, compression and other engine problems can produce similar symptoms. On the EcoBoost engines, repeated misfire symptoms alongside unexplained coolant loss deserve a look at the coolant-intrusion guide rather than assuming every misfire is ignition-related.

Should you change coils at the same time?

Not simply because the spark plugs are due. A coil can fail independently, but replacing four working coils on a schedule is different from diagnosing a coil that is actually misfiring. If a code identifies a cylinder, a technician can compare ignition, fuel and mechanical evidence before deciding which component is responsible.

What about pre-gapped plugs?

Many modern fine-wire plugs are sold with a preset gap, but the box still needs to match the correct engine. Shipping damage or an incorrect catalog listing can happen. Ford's engine-specific range gives you a reliable reference for confirming that the plug supplied for your Escape is appropriate.

Fine-wire electrodes can be damaged by aggressive adjustment. Follow the spark-plug manufacturer's instructions if a new plug is outside the Ford range rather than forcing the electrode into position.

What replacement involves

The 2017 Escape uses coil-on-plug ignition. Spark-plug replacement involves accessing the coils, keeping debris out of the plug wells, removing and installing the correct plugs, and tightening them to the correct service specification. Because damaged cylinder-head threads can turn a routine maintenance job into an expensive repair, this guide focuses on specifications and diagnosis rather than reproducing a workshop procedure.

Misfire code after new spark plugs

If a misfire appears immediately after plug work, do not assume the new plug itself is defective. Checks include whether the correct plug was supplied for that engine, whether each ignition-coil connector is fully seated, whether a coil boot was damaged, and whether the misfire code points to the same cylinder that was disturbed.

Buying spark plugs for a 2017 Escape

I would shop by engine and VIN, not just by model year. The three engines have different Ford plug listings and different gap specifications. Ford's 2017 manual lists Motorcraft SP-539 for the 1.5L EcoBoost, SP-537 for the 2.0L EcoBoost and SP-530 for the 2.5L, but current replacement numbers should still be verified because service part numbers can be updated.
