2017 Ford Escape Trunk Dimensions and Cargo Space
Numbers are nice, but what matters is how your 2017 Ford Escape fits into your day. Here is a clear view of exterior size for parking, interior space for people, and trunk dimensions and cargo layout for errands and trips. I include a few packing tricks I use on our Escape, which we call Alice.
Exterior footprint for parking
- Overall length is in the compact SUV range. Most owners can nose-in comfortably in standard city spots
- Width with mirrors folded is narrow enough for tight garages. If you park in an old building, fold mirrors before pulling in
- Turning circle is small enough for quick U turns on quiet streets. Practice once with cones so you know the limit
Interior space at a glance
- Front seats fit adults well once height and rake are set. The wheel has good reach adjustment
- Rear seats have adult legroom for medium trips. Long drives feel best with two adults and a child in back
- Headroom is good for most drivers without feeling cavernous. Adjust seat height before blaming the roofline
Cargo area and fold options
- Rear seats fold in a 60 by 40 split. You can carry a long box and a rear passenger at the same time
- With both sides down, the floor is long enough for most flat pack furniture and sports gear
- The spare tire well holds a surprising amount of soft items. I keep towels and basic tools there to free up the floor
Roof load basics
- Factory rails accept crossbars. Match bar width to the roof and use a torque spec for the feet so they do not creep
- Roof boxes add wind noise and reduce MPG. Remove them when you are not traveling
- Balance the load left to right. Heavier items should sit low and toward the middle of the vehicle
Pack smarter and avoid rattles
- Use soft sided bins that fit the hatch width. Hard bins can squeak against trim
- Set heavier bins at the back of the seat to prevent sliding. Use the cargo hooks with small straps
- Place a foam pad between long items and plastic panels. The cabin will stay quiet on rough roads
Products to buy
- Cargo liner with raised edge for the Escape Shop liners
- Collapsible trunk organizer that straps to tie downs Shop organizers
- Low profile crossbars sized for Escape roof rails Shop crossbars
- Aerodynamic roof box for long trips. Match to bar rating and local rules Shop roof boxes
- Soft foam blocks and felt tape to stop cargo squeaks Shop felt
Trip layout I use
For a weekend run I place a soft crate left rear for food and a bin right rear for tools and towels. Suitcases go upright behind the seats so they do not slide into the hatch. A small cooler sits on the floor behind the driver with a strap to a cargo hook. This layout stays quiet and everything is easy to reach when we stop.
