SYNC 3, CarPlay and Android Auto (2017 Ford Escape)

Getting phone features working should feel easy. Here is a clean setup guide for SYNC 3 on a 2017 Ford Escape with quick fixes for connection quirks. I keep notes on the things that improved daily use in our Escape, which we call Alice.

CarPlay setup

  1. Use a short, quality Lightning cable. Plug into the front USB
  2. Unlock the iPhone and allow CarPlay when prompted on both the phone and screen
  3. If CarPlay does not appear, try a different cable and clean the USB port with canned air. Reboot the phone and cycle the vehicle ignition

Android Auto setup

  1. Install Android Auto if your phone requires it, then enable projection in settings
  2. Use a high quality USB-A to USB-C cable that supports data, not just charge
  3. Accept the prompts on the phone and the SYNC screen. If it fails, try another cable and a different phone to isolate the issue

Quick reset if SYNC acts odd

Turn the ignition off, open the driver door, wait a minute, then close and restart. If issues return, remove the phone from SYNC, delete SYNC on the phone, and pair again. That solves most glitches.
