2017 Ford Escape A/C Compressor Not Turning On

If the A/C in a 2017 Ford Escape blows warm air and the compressor does not appear to engage, the compressor itself is only one possible cause. The system also depends on power, control signals, refrigerant pressure and other conditions before the clutch is commanded on.

Useful starting point: Ford's 2017 Escape fuse chart lists F27, 15A for the air-conditioning clutch and R11 as the A/C clutch relay in the engine-compartment power-distribution box. A good fuse or relay does not prove the compressor is healthy, and a non-engaging clutch does not automatically mean the compressor has failed.

First, make sure the problem really is the compressor

A/C complaints can sound similar from the driver's seat. Before focusing on the compressor, separate the symptom:

No airflowIf little or no air comes from the vents, start with the blower side of the HVAC system rather than the compressor.
Strong airflow, warm airThis is more consistent with a refrigeration, compressor, control or air-mixing problem.
Cold while moving, warm at idleCooling-fan operation and airflow across the condenser become more important clues.

Why the clutch may not be commanded on

The vehicle can withhold compressor operation for reasons other than a failed compressor. Examples can include a refrigerant-pressure problem, an electrical/control fault, a sensor input that is outside the expected range or an engine/cooling condition that changes A/C operation.

That is why watching only the front of the compressor can lead to an expensive wrong diagnosis. A technician can confirm whether the system is requesting compressor operation and whether the electrical and refrigerant sides agree with that command.

If the A/C is cold while driving but warm at idle

This symptom is worth separating from a compressor that never engages. The condenser at the front of the vehicle needs airflow. At road speed the vehicle creates that airflow naturally; while stopped, the electric cooling fan becomes much more important. What I would record before booking diagnosis

Refrigerant-system safety: Ford warns that the A/C system contains refrigerant under high pressure and says qualified personnel should service it. This page is for identifying symptoms and circuits, not for opening, charging, venting or bypassing the refrigerant system.

Compressor problem or blower problem?

If there is no air movement from the vents, the compressor can be working perfectly and the cabin will still feel as if the A/C is dead. Common questions about a non-engaging A/C compressor

Does a good F27 fuse mean the compressor is bad?

No. The fuse only confirms one part of the power path has not opened. The compressor still depends on relay operation, wiring, control commands and acceptable system conditions. That is why I would not order a compressor based only on a visual clutch check and a good fuse.

Could low refrigerant keep the compressor from running?

A refrigerant-pressure problem can affect whether the system allows compressor operation. The important part is finding out why pressure is wrong rather than automatically adding refrigerant. A sealed-system leak or another fault needs a different repair from an electrical problem.

What if the compressor clicks on and off repeatedly?

Rapid or unusual cycling is another reason to have system pressure and control data checked. Record whether the air ever becomes cold and whether the behavior changes with outside temperature or engine speed. Those details are more useful than replacing parts based on the clicking alone.
