2017 Ford Escape Coolant Type & Capacity

By Don St Germain, owner of a 2017 Ford Escape SE Updated August 11, 2026
2017 Ford specification: Ford's North American manual lists coolant meeting WSS-M97B44-D2 for the 2017 Escape. The published total capacity depends on the engine: 11.8 L for the 1.5L EcoBoost, 9.8 L for the 2.0L EcoBoost and 10.7 L for the 2.5L.

Why I list the Ford specification instead of just a coolant colour

Colour alone is not a dependable way to identify coolant chemistry. Ford's 2017 manual identifies the required specification, which is a better reference when checking a product or service invoice.

The original North American manual names Motorcraft Orange Prediluted Antifreeze/Coolant for these engines and ties it to specification WSS-M97B44-D2. Ford has changed coolant products over the years, so when servicing an older vehicle I would confirm the current Ford-approved replacement by specification or VIN rather than shop by colour alone.

Total capacity is not the same as a top-up amount

The numbers above are published system capacities. They are useful for identifying the size of the cooling system, but they do not tell you how much fluid a particular vehicle needs after a partial drain or minor top-up.

When a low coolant level needs more attention

If the coolant level keeps falling without an obvious explanation, see the separate 2017 Ford Escape coolant-intrusion guide. Ford published engine-specific service bulletins for certain 1.5L and 2.0L EcoBoost Escapes with low coolant, white exhaust smoke and rough-running symptoms.

A recurring loss is more important than the amount needed to top up once. It can point to a leak or another cooling-system problem that should be diagnosed.

Safety: Engine coolant is toxic, and a hot cooling system can be pressurized. This page intentionally stays at the specification/reference level. Do not open a hot cooling system, and have leaks or uncertain coolant compatibility checked by a qualified technician.

If the coolant level is stable but warm-up or temperature behavior seems wrong, see 2017 Ford Escape thermostat symptoms. For broader fluid information, see fluids and capacities. For engine-specific reliability concerns, see the reliability guide.
