2017 Ford Escape SYNC 3 & Radio Reset

If the radio or SYNC screen freezes, loses a feature, stops responding normally or has trouble reconnecting to a phone, Ford provides more than one kind of reset. The important part is choosing the least disruptive one first.

Which reset do you need?

2017 Escape SYNC 3 system reset

Ford's 2017 Escape manual describes the SYNC 3 system reset this way:

1. Press and hold the Seek Up button while also pressing and holding the Radio Power button.
2. After about five seconds, the screen should go black.
3. Allow roughly one to two minutes for the system reset to finish before using SYNC 3 again.

Ford says this reset is intended to restore functionality and does not erase paired devices, phonebook information, call history, text messages or user settings.

What about the non-SYNC-3 system?

The same 2017 manual also documents a system reset for vehicles equipped with the earlier SYNC interface. Ford says to hold Seek Up and Radio Power together and release them after about two to three seconds, then allow a few minutes for the reset to complete.

When should you use a master reset?

A master reset is the more disruptive option. Ford's 2017 manual says it restores factory defaults and erases personal settings and personal data. I would reserve it for persistent problems after simpler troubleshooting, or use it before selling the vehicle so stored phones, contacts and other personal information are removed.

Because menu wording can vary with SYNC software, use the General/Settings area on the screen and confirm that you are selecting Master Reset only when you actually want the stored information erased.

Try these before a master reset

• If only one phone has trouble, remove that phone from SYNC and remove SYNC from the phone, then pair again.
• If CarPlay or Android Auto is the only problem, test a known-good data cable and the other USB functions first.
• If the whole screen is frozen or a feature has disappeared, use Ford's system reset.
• If the screen repeatedly reboots, also consider the vehicle's battery and charging condition rather than assuming software is the only cause.

SYNC screen works, but the backup camera does not

Radio dead versus radio frozen

A reset can help a frozen software feature, but it cannot repair a circuit with no power. If the display and audio system are completely dead, or several unrelated electrical items failed at the same time, check the fuse-box guide and electrical issues guide before assuming the head unit itself has failed.

Before selling or trading the Escape

This is one situation where a master reset makes sense even if SYNC is working perfectly. Ford recommends removing stored personal information when you no longer plan to use the system or vehicle. Also remove the vehicle from any connected account or app you used with it.
