2017 Ford Escape Brake Light & Tail Light Assembly
One of the most useful things to know before searching for a "2017 Ford Escape brake light bulb" is that Ford's North American 2017 bulb chart lists the tail/brake lamp as LED. Ford also lists the high-mount brake lamp as LED. The rear turn signal, backup lamp and rear side marker use separate replaceable bulb types.
2017 Ford Escape rear lamp chart
| Rear lighting function | Ford trade number / type |
|---|---|
| Tail / brake lamp | LED |
| High-mount brake lamp | LED |
| Rear turn lamp | WY21W |
| Backup lamp | 921 |
| Rear side marker | W5W |
| License plate lamp | W5W |
Bulb, LED section or full lamp assembly?
The outer rear housing contains more than one lighting function. A failed rear turn signal or backup lamp is different from failure of the LED tail/brake section. Before ordering parts, identify exactly which part of the lamp is dark.
What if the dash says Brake Lamp Bulb Fault?
Ford's information-message chart includes a Brake Lamp Bulb Fault message for a brake-lamp failure. If that message appears, verify which rear lamp function is actually out rather than assuming a conventional bulb is used everywhere.
When the assembly itself is the problem
A lamp housing may need attention if it is cracked, badly damaged, has a failed LED section or has an electrical problem at its connector. Condensation that clears can be different from water collecting inside the housing, so look for cracks, damaged seals or signs of impact.
Brake light switch and fuse reference
Ford's engine-compartment fuse chart lists F21, 5A for the stop-light switch. That does not mean F21 is a universal answer for every brake-light problem; the body-control and lamp circuits are more involved than a single bulb and fuse. If several brake lamps behave strangely together, an electrical diagnosis is more useful than replacing the lamp assembly by guesswork.
Optional photos that would improve this page
When I add original photos of Alice, the most useful set will be the complete rear lamp from outside, the lamp with the liftgate open, the connector/mounting area and a close-up showing which section is the LED brake/tail lamp. The page is already coded so the first photo appears automatically if /images/alice-rear-tail-light.jpg is uploaded later.

Common brake-light and tail-light questions
What brake light bulb does a 2017 Ford Escape use?
For the main tail/brake function, Ford's North American 2017 chart says LED, not a conventional trade-number bulb. The rear turn signal and backup lamp are separate and do have bulb numbers. This is an important distinction when shopping for a repair.
Does one dark section mean the entire assembly is bad?
Not necessarily. First identify whether the failed section is the LED tail/brake function, the turn lamp, backup lamp or side marker. Multiple functions failing together can also point toward a connector, wiring or control problem rather than several lamps failing at the same time.
What should I look for when comparing replacement assemblies?
Match the exact 2017 Escape side and lamp configuration, inspect the connector style and mounting points, and avoid assuming that a listing for a nearby model year is identical. If the original housing was damaged by impact, also inspect the mounting area so a new assembly is not installed against bent or broken supports.
