2017 Ford Escape Auto Start-Stop Reset & Not Working

By Don St Germain, owner of a 2017 Ford Escape SE Updated August 11, 2026

When Auto Start-Stop stops shutting the engine off at red lights, many owners search for a "reset." On the 2017 Escape, the more useful first question is whether the system is actually reporting a fault or whether normal operating conditions are preventing an automatic stop.

There is not a normal owner reset that forces Auto Start-Stop to work. Ford's information display can show that Auto Start-Stop is unavailable when conditions are not right, and it can show a separate malfunction / service required message when the system has a fault.

Why Auto Start-Stop may be unavailable

Ford lists many reasons a start-stop system may temporarily keep the engine running. Across Ford's system documentation, common conditions include:

That means a start-stop system that works on a mild day but stays active during a cold morning or hot afternoon may be behaving normally.

Why the 12-volt battery matters

Start-stop operation depends on the battery-management system knowing the 12-volt battery has enough charge and is in the right operating range. A battery that still starts the engine can be weak enough that Auto Start-Stop is restricted. If other battery or charging messages are showing, I would address those first.

What do the messages mean?

MessageMeaning
Auto StartStop Not AvailableOperating conditions are not currently met. This does not automatically mean a failed part.
Auto StartStop malfunction Service requiredFord says the vehicle should be checked by an authorized dealer.
Manual Restart RequiredThe system is not functioning normally and the engine needs a manual restart.

Does the dash button permanently disable Auto Start-Stop?

On Ford systems equipped with an Auto Start-Stop button, switching it off for the current drive is different from a permanent system reset. Ford's documentation says deactivation with the button lasts only for the current ignition cycle on systems that use this arrangement.

What I would check before booking diagnosis

If battery behavior is suspicious, see the 2017 Escape battery and charging guide. If there is a check-engine light, start with the engine-code guide.
