2017 Ford Escape P0299 Code: Turbo Underboost
If your 2017 Ford Escape has a P0299 code, the engine computer saw less boost pressure than it expected. On this model, the code is relevant to the turbocharged 1.5L and 2.0L EcoBoost engines. It does not apply to the naturally aspirated 2.5L engine.
Symptoms that can show up with P0299
The exact symptoms depend on how far the measured boost is from the commanded boost and what caused the difference. An Escape may still drive, but it can feel noticeably weaker.
- Check-engine light with P0299 stored or pending.
- Reduced acceleration, especially when merging or climbing a grade.
- Boost that feels inconsistent or power that drops under load.
- A new hiss, whistle or rushing-air sound from the intake or charge-air system.
- Other air, pressure, fuel or misfire codes stored at the same time.
Does P0299 mean the turbo is bad?
No. A turbocharger is one possible part of an underboost diagnosis, but there are several things between the air inlet and the engine that can keep the system from reaching the expected pressure. Replacing the turbo before checking the rest of the system can be an expensive guess.
Common areas a proper diagnosis may examine
I would think of P0299 as a boost-system performance problem rather than a single-part code. Depending on the engine and the other evidence, a technician may look at:
- Charge-air hoses, pipes and connections: a loose clamp, split hose or leaking connection can let pressurized air escape.
- Intercooler / charge-air cooler plumbing: damage or poor sealing can reduce measured boost.
- Wastegate or boost-control operation: if the turbo cannot control exhaust flow correctly, commanded boost may not be reached.
- Pressure and airflow sensing: implausible sensor information can change boost control or point the diagnosis in the wrong direction.
- Air intake restriction: damaged or obstructed intake components can affect how the engine breathes.
- Turbocharger condition: only after the surrounding system and control evidence support that conclusion.
What I would record before clearing the code
Before erasing P0299, save the information your scan tool can show. That can make an intermittent problem much easier to understand later.
- All stored and pending codes, not just P0299.
- Freeze-frame engine speed, load and temperature if available.
- Whether the loss of power happens only under hard acceleration or is present all the time.
- Any new hiss, whistle or intake sound.
- Any recent work around the air filter, intake hoses or engine bay.
P0299 and the 1.5L EcoBoost
Alice, our 2017 Escape SE, has the 1.5L EcoBoost. If I saw P0299 on her, I would start by looking for the least dramatic explanations first: another code that gives more context, a disturbed charge-air connection, visible hose damage or something that changed after recent service.
I would also keep unrelated but important 1.5L concerns separate. For example, repeated coolant loss, white exhaust smoke and recurring misfires belong in the coolant-intrusion and misfire-code guides. One code should not be used to explain every symptom on the vehicle.
P0299 and the 2.0L EcoBoost
The 2.0L EcoBoost also uses turbocharging, so the same broad underboost logic applies: commanded boost, actual boost, charge-air integrity and turbo control all matter. The exact hardware and routing differ from the 1.5L, which is why I would avoid following a repair video for the wrong engine.
Can you keep driving with P0299?
If the Escape suddenly has much less power, is running poorly, is overheating, has a flashing check-engine light, or shows another serious warning, stop using it and have it diagnosed. If the vehicle otherwise runs normally with only a stored P0299, arrange diagnosis rather than repeatedly clearing the code and hoping it stays away.
What I would avoid
- Buying a turbocharger because a search result says P0299 equals "bad turbo."
- Clearing the code before saving the rest of the DTCs and freeze-frame data.
- Pressure-testing or disassembling boost plumbing without the correct equipment and procedure.
- Using 1.5L component locations or repair steps on a 2.0L, or vice versa.
