2017 Ford Escape Heater Not Working or Blowing Cold Air
A 2017 Escape that "has no heat" can actually have several different problems. The first question is whether the vents have no airflow, good airflow that stays cold, or an engine that takes too long to warm up. Those symptoms point in different directions.

No airflow from the vents
If nothing comes from the vents even when the fan is set high, that is different from a heater that blows cold air. Ford lists F10, 40A for the heater blower motor in the 2017 Escape fuse chart, and the blower system also has its own relay/control components.

Strong airflow, but the air stays cold
When the blower works normally but never produces warm air, I would first pay attention to whether the engine itself reaches normal operating temperature and whether the coolant level is stable.

Engine takes a long time to warm up
If the temperature gauge rises unusually slowly and cabin heat is weak, thermostat behavior becomes more relevant. A thermostat that does not control coolant flow normally can affect warm-up time and heater performance.

Coolant level keeps dropping

Heater is warm while driving but colder at idle
This pattern can be useful because it suggests the symptom changes with engine speed or operating conditions. Rather than guessing at a heater component, note the coolant level, engine temperature behavior and whether there are any cooling-system warnings. A technician can use those details to narrow the cause more efficiently.
One side is warmer than the other
On vehicles with dual-zone automatic climate control, left-right temperature differences can point away from a simple low-blower problem and more toward temperature-door/control behavior or uneven heat transfer through the HVAC system. Ford's automatic climate control allows separate driver and passenger temperature settings, so first make sure the settings themselves are not creating the difference.
Sweet smell, window fogging or damp carpet
Those symptoms are worth mentioning during diagnosis because they can point toward a coolant leak in or around the HVAC system rather than a thermostat or blower issue. I would not ignore an unexplained coolant smell or repeated coolant loss just because the vehicle still drives normally.
High engine temperature is not a heater problem
Ford's 2017 Escape information display can show High Engine Temperature Stop Safely and Power Reduced to Lower Engine Temp. If either appears, treat it as an engine-cooling concern. Ford instructs the driver to stop safely and allow the engine to cool when the high-temperature warning appears.
Do not open a hot coolant reservoir. The cooling system can be pressurized and hot coolant can cause serious burns.
What I would check in order
- Decide whether the problem is no airflow or cold airflow.
- Check whether the engine reaches normal operating temperature.
- When the engine is fully cool, note whether the coolant level is stable over time.
- Look for temperature warnings, coolant-loss signs or check-engine codes.

Manual versus automatic climate control
