2017 Ford Escape Reliability: What Owners Should Know

If you are wondering whether a 2017 Ford Escape is reliable, the most useful answer is not a single score. The 2017 Escape came with three different engines, front- or all-wheel drive, different equipment levels, and now has close to a decade of real-world use behind it. Condition and maintenance history matter a lot.

My short take: a well-maintained 2017 Escape can still be a practical daily driver, but I would not shop by trim level alone. I would identify the engine, verify recall work, look closely at cooling-system history on the EcoBoost engines, and pay attention to how the transmission behaves. A clean service history is worth more to me than a long options list.

The biggest reliability concern: coolant intrusion on some EcoBoost engines

This is the issue I would research most carefully before buying a 2017 Escape with an EcoBoost engine. Ford published technical service information covering some 2017-2019 Escapes with the 1.5L EcoBoost that could show a low coolant level, white exhaust smoke, rough running or certain misfire/over-temperature codes. Ford's bulletin says the condition may be caused by coolant entering a cylinder.

Ford also published a separate bulletin for some 2.0L EcoBoost Escapes covering low coolant, white exhaust smoke, rough running and coolant in the cylinders. These bulletins do not mean every 1.5L or 2.0L Escape will develop the problem, but they are important enough that I would want service records before buying one. What I would ask a seller: Has the Escape ever lost coolant between services? Has it had repeated misfire work, cooling-system work, a short-block or long-block replacement, or a Ford customer-satisfaction-program repair? If the answer is yes, I would want paperwork rather than a verbal explanation.

Transmission reliability and the shift-cable recall

The 2017 Escape uses a six-speed automatic transmission. Normal shift feel can vary with temperature, driving style and maintenance, but repeated harsh engagement, delayed movement after selecting a gear, slipping, or warning messages deserves proper diagnosis.

There is also an important safety recall that covers certain 2013-2019 Escape vehicles equipped with the 6F35 transmission. NHTSA recall 22V-413, Ford recall 22S43, concerns the bushing that connects the shift cable to the transmission. If that bushing degrades or detaches, the shifter position may not match the transmission's actual gear. Recall eligibility is VIN-specific, so I would verify completion rather than assuming a vehicle was or was not affected.

I would call the 1.5L a buy-on-condition engine. It is pleasant for everyday driving and is the engine in our Escape SE, but the Ford coolant-intrusion service information means I would be more careful about service history than I would with an engine that did not have that documented concern.

That does not mean a 1.5L Escape should automatically be avoided. It means I would check coolant history, cold-start behavior, warning-light history and repair records. An Escape that has been maintained carefully and has documented repairs may be a better choice than a lower-mileage vehicle with no history at all.

Is the 2.0L EcoBoost reliable?

The 2.0L gives the 2017 Escape noticeably more performance and is the engine I would look for if towing ability or stronger acceleration mattered. It also has Ford service information related to coolant entering the cylinders on some vehicles, so I would apply the same documentation-first approach.

If the Escape has AWD, I would also make sure all four tires are closely matched in size and wear. AWD adds capability, but it also adds components that should be considered when judging long-term ownership cost.

What about the 2.5L?

The naturally aspirated 2.5L is confined to the S trim in the North American 2017 lineup and avoids the turbocharger used by the EcoBoost engines. That simpler layout can be attractive to shoppers who value straightforward transportation over acceleration or higher towing capability.

I still would not buy one blindly. A decade-old vehicle can have neglected fluids, worn suspension parts, old tires, deferred brake work or transmission problems regardless of engine design.

Reliability is not the same as repair-free ownership

By this age, I expect any 2017 vehicle to need normal wear items. Tires, brakes, batteries, wipers, filters, fluids and suspension pieces are not automatically evidence of a "bad" vehicle. The bigger question is whether maintenance has been predictable or whether the vehicle has a pattern of serious engine, transmission, electrical or cooling-system trouble.

Yes, but I would buy the history and condition, not just the badge on the tailgate. The 2017 Escape remains a useful size, is easy to live with, and has enough owner information available now that many of its known trouble spots can be researched before money changes hands.

For me, the best candidate is not necessarily the lowest-mileage Titanium. It is the Escape with a clear service history, no unexplained warning signs, completed recalls, good tires and brakes, and an owner who can answer basic questions about how the vehicle has been maintained.
