2017 Ford Escape Oil Life Reset
If you changed the oil in a 2017 Ford Escape and the oil-life reminder is still showing, the monitor needs to be reset separately. This is one of those jobs that is easy to forget because changing the oil does not automatically tell the vehicle that fresh oil was installed.
How to reset the oil life monitor
- Park the Escape and switch the ignition on without starting the engine.
- Fully press the accelerator pedal and brake pedal at the same time.
- Keep both pedals fully pressed. The information display should show that the reset is in progress after a few seconds.
- Continue holding both pedals until the display confirms the reset is complete. Ford lists about 25 seconds.
- Release both pedals and switch the ignition off.
This procedure resets the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor. It does not change the oil itself, diagnose low oil pressure, or clear unrelated warning lights.
Oil life reset vs. an oil warning light
These are easy to mix up. The maintenance reminder tells you the calculated oil life is low or used up. An oil-pressure warning is a different issue and should not be treated as a maintenance-reset problem. If you have a red oil-pressure warning, unusual engine noise, or another serious warning, shut the vehicle down safely and have the cause checked.
What if the reset does not work?
I would check the simple things first rather than repeatedly trying random button combinations:
- Make sure the ignition is on but the engine is not running.
- Press both pedals fully and keep them pressed long enough for the completion message.
- Watch the information display for the reset-in-progress and reset-complete messages.
- If the display behaves differently from the owner's manual, confirm that you are looking at the correct procedure for the vehicle and market.
- If the vehicle is showing another warning or the information display is malfunctioning, have that issue diagnosed instead of assuming the oil monitor is the problem.
When should the oil-life monitor be reset?
Ford's scheduled-maintenance information says the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor should be reset after an engine oil and filter change. The monitor uses vehicle operating conditions to estimate when another oil change is due, so a truthful reset point matters.
On our 2017 Escape SE, Alice, I treat the reset as the last item on the oil-service checklist rather than the first. That makes it much harder to accidentally reset the reminder before the service is actually done.
