2017 Ford Escape Door Code Reset & Keypad Programming

By Don St Germain, owner of a 2017 Ford Escape SE Updated August 11, 2026

The keypad on an equipped 2017 Escape uses a permanent factory-set five-digit code plus optional personal codes. The important distinction is that you do not erase or replace the factory code. You use the factory code to create or erase personal codes.

If you already have the factory code: Ford says you can program up to five personal five-digit entry codes. If the factory code is missing, Ford says it is available from an authorized dealer; this page does not cover bypassing or defeating the vehicle's access system.

Where is the factory door code?

Ford's 2017 Escape owner's manual says the factory-set code is on the owner's wallet card in the glove box and is also available from an authorized dealer. The factory code continues to work even after personal codes are programmed.

Programming a personal code

For an owner who already has the factory code, Ford's process is:

  1. Enter the factory-set five-digit code.
  2. Press 1·2 on the keypad within five seconds.
  3. Enter the new five-digit personal code, entering each number within five seconds of the previous one.
  4. Press 1·2 again to save it as personal code 1.

Ford says the doors lock and unlock to confirm successful programming. Additional personal-code slots use the other paired keypad buttons described in the manual.

How to erase personal codes

Ford's manual also lets an owner who knows the factory code erase the stored personal codes. Because the factory code is permanent, erasing personal codes returns the keypad to factory-code-only operation.

What if the keypad will not accept a code?

Ford notes that entering the numbers too quickly can prevent the unlock function from working. The keypad also has an anti-scan feature: after seven incorrect codes, it temporarily disables keypad entry for one minute. If you know the correct code, slow down and try again after the keypad is available.

Can the factory code itself be reset?

Not through the normal owner keypad programming procedure. The factory-set code remains valid even when personal codes are added or erased. If the owner's wallet card is missing, the safe route is to use Ford/dealer ownership verification rather than trying to bypass the access system.

Keypad fuse

If the keypad has no response at all and other electrical symptoms are present, the 2017 Escape fuse chart includes a keypad circuit. See the 2017 Escape fuse-box guide for the official fuse-chart link.
