2017 Ford Escape Thermostat Symptoms
A thermostat can affect how quickly an engine warms up and how coolant moves through the cooling system, but many Escape cooling problems can look similar at first. Low coolant, a cooling-fan problem, a sensor issue, a leak or an engine-specific coolant concern can all change temperature behavior.

What Ford tells the driver when temperature is too high
Ford's 2017 information display includes a red High Engine Temperature Stop Safely message for excessive engine temperature. Ford also lists Power Reduced to Lower Engine Temp when the vehicle reduces power to help control a high-temperature condition.
Those messages matter more than guessing which part caused them. If the Escape is overheating, the first priority is safe shutdown and diagnosis after the engine has cooled, not continuing to drive in hopes that the gauge comes back down.
Thermostat symptoms versus low coolant
Low coolant can create confusing symptoms because the cooling system and cabin heater both depend on proper coolant level and circulation. Before blaming the thermostat, look at the broader pattern:
- Is the coolant level repeatedly dropping?
- Is there visible residue or wetness from a leak?
- Did the heater output change at the same time?
- Are there check-engine codes or a temperature warning?
- Does the vehicle have a 1.5L or 2.0L EcoBoost with a history that deserves review for coolant-intrusion concerns?

Thermostat symptoms versus a cooling-fan problem
A cooling-fan concern often becomes more noticeable at low road speed or while idling because there is less natural airflow through the radiator. A thermostat problem can produce a different temperature pattern. What about P0128?
P0128 is commonly associated with engine coolant temperature not reaching the expected regulating temperature quickly enough. It is a useful clue, not a direct order to replace the thermostat. A technician can compare coolant-temperature data, ambient conditions, warm-up behavior and related codes before deciding whether the thermostat, sensor or another part of the cooling system is responsible.
Can a bad thermostat affect fuel economy?
If an engine stays cooler than the control system expects, warm-up strategy can last longer. That can affect how the engine is managed. But a change in fuel economy has many possible causes, so I would not use MPG alone as proof of a thermostat problem.

- The red high-temperature warning appears.
- Coolant is rapidly disappearing.
- There is steam, a major leak or a strong coolant smell.
- The engine runs poorly at the same time as coolant loss.
- The temperature repeatedly climbs above normal.
