2017 Ford Escape P1450 Code

If a scan tool shows P1450 on a 2017 Ford Escape, the code points to the evaporative-emissions system, usually shortened to EVAP. It does not automatically mean one particular part needs to be replaced. The useful starting point is understanding what Ford means by the code and then looking at the other codes and symptoms that came with it.

What P1450 means on a Ford: Ford defines P1450 as Unable to Bleed Up Fuel Tank Vacuum. In Ford's OBD documentation, the monitor is looking for excessive vacuum in the EVAP system and includes a functional check for a canister purge valve that may be stuck open.

What the code is telling you

The EVAP system captures fuel vapor instead of simply releasing it into the air. The powertrain control module runs checks to make sure the system can create and release pressure or vacuum as expected. P1450 means the monitor saw too much vacuum or could not get the tank pressure to recover the way it expected.

That makes the canister purge valve an important part of the conversation, but a trouble code is still a diagnostic clue rather than a guaranteed parts order.

Symptoms that may appear with P1450

Some owners notice little more than the check-engine light. Others may notice a change around refueling or idle. Symptoms can overlap with other EVAP and engine-management problems, so I would not use one symptom as proof of a failed purge valve.

Does P1450 mean the purge valve is bad?

Not automatically. Ford's OBD monitor information does connect P1450 with excessive EVAP vacuum and a check for a purge valve that is stuck open. That makes the purge valve and its control circuit important diagnostic possibilities. But EVAP hoses, connections, pressure sensing and other system faults can change how the system behaves too.

A better question is: what evidence supports the purge valve on this particular Escape? The exact codes, when the concern happens, and whether there are other EVAP faults are more useful than replacing a valve simply because P1450 appeared in a search result.

P1450 versus Ford TSB 19-2171

This distinction is worth making because these topics are often mixed together online. Ford TSB 19-2171 covers certain 2017-2019 Escape and MKC vehicles with EcoBoost engines when P04F0 and/or P144C are stored. Ford tells technicians to check EVAP vapor-line connections in that situation.

Can you keep driving with P1450?

A P1450 code by itself does not tell you how the vehicle is behaving at that moment. If the Escape is running normally and only the check-engine light is on, arrange diagnosis rather than ignoring it indefinitely. If there is a strong fuel smell, poor running, stalling, or another warning that affects safe operation, stop using the vehicle and have it checked.
