2017 Ford Escape Swollen Lug Nuts
If the socket that used to fit your 2017 Ford Escape lug nuts suddenly will not go on properly, the lug nut itself may have changed shape. Ford used capped, two-piece wheel nuts on vehicles including the Escape, and owners have reported the outer cap swelling or distorting over time.
The important distinction is that the thread size has not changed. Ford lists M12 x 1.5 wheel fasteners for the 2017 Escape. The problem is the outside of a capped lug nut becoming larger or misshapen, which is why a socket that once fit can suddenly feel too small.
Why Ford lug nuts can swell
The issue discussed by owners and in past litigation involves two-piece lug nuts. There is a structural inner nut with a thin decorative outer cap. When that cap corrodes, separates or deforms, the outside dimension can grow enough that the original lug wrench or normal socket no longer fits the way it should.
A 2017 proposed class-action lawsuit named Ford Escape vehicles among the models alleged to use this style of lug nut. The lawsuit was dismissed in 2019, so I would not describe swollen lug nuts as a court-proven defect or a recall. The owner complaints are still helpful because they describe the same problem I ran into on Alice.
Signs the lug nuts are starting to swell
- The normal socket is suddenly tight even though it used to fit.
- A socket will not slide fully over the lug nut.
- The decorative cap looks rounded, cracked or distorted.
- A tire shop mentions that the original lug nuts are swollen.
- Removing or tightening the nuts becomes much harder than it used to be.
If one is starting to swell, inspect the rest. On Alice, it was did not make sense to think of it as one odd lug nut once several were becoming difficult.
Why a half-size socket sometimes comes up
When the cap has expanded, the usual socket may be too small while the next full size can be too loose. That is why owners and tire shops sometimes use an in-between or half-size socket to deal with a swollen capped nut.
That can help a shop remove a problem lug nut, but it does not return the lug nut to its original shape. If the cap is already distorted enough to need an unusual socket, I would rather replace the damaged hardware with lug nuts that properly match the wheel, stud and seat than plan on fighting the same ones at every tire change.
What size are the 2017 Ford Escape lug nuts?
Ford lists the wheel fastener thread as M12 x 1.5 and the road-wheel torque as 100 lb-ft (135 N-m). Those are the Ford specifications. The outside hex/socket fit is a separate issue because factory-style capped lug nuts can become distorted and replacement nuts can use a different outer design.
See the 2017 Ford Escape lug nut size page for the thread specification and the wheel torque page for Ford's torque and retorque notes.
Should swollen lug nuts be replaced?
If a capped lug nut is visibly damaged, badly swollen or no longer accepts the proper tool reliably, replacement makes sense. Wheel hardware needs to seat and tighten correctly every time the wheel is serviced.
I would match replacement hardware to the Escape's M12 x 1.5 studs and, just as importantly, to the wheel's required seat style and dimensions. Aftermarket wheels can use different hardware requirements, so thread size alone is not enough to choose a replacement.
Was there a Ford swollen-lug-nut recall?
I did not find a recall for the 2017 Escape swollen-lug-nut issue. A proposed class action was filed in 2017 over two-piece Ford lug nuts, but a federal court granted Ford's motion to dismiss in January 2019. That history is worth mentioning because many online posts refer to the lawsuit without mentioning what happened afterward.
More recent owner complaints still describe swollen lug nuts on 2017 Escapes. That does not turn the issue into a recall, but it does show why checking the wheel nuts before a roadside flat tire is worthwhile.
A check I would add to normal tire service
Whenever the tires are rotated, changed for winter or removed for brake work, I would ask the shop to mention any lug nuts that are beginning to distort. Catching them while a normal socket still fits is much easier than discovering the problem when a wheel needs to come off unexpectedly.
The broader 2017 Ford Escape wheels and bolt-pattern guide covers 5 x 108 fitment, wheel sizes and the other dimensions that matter when shopping for wheels.
