2017 Ford Escape A/C Not Working

"The A/C does not work" can mean several different things: no air comes from the vents, the fan works but the air stays warm, cooling fades while idling, or the system works only sometimes. I use this page as the A/C troubleshooting hub, then send each symptom to a more focused guide.

Start with the symptom: no airflow points toward the blower side; strong airflow with warm air points toward refrigeration/control; A/C that becomes warm mainly while stopped makes cooling-fan airflow more interesting; a compressor that never appears to engage deserves electrical/control and refrigerant-pressure diagnosis before anyone condemns the compressor.

2017 Escape A/C electrical references

Ford's 2017 fuse chart lists F27, 15A for the air-conditioning clutch, R11 as the A/C clutch relay, F10, 40A for the heater blower motor and R13 as the heater-blower relay. The passenger-compartment chart also lists F71, 7.5A for the climate-control head.

Those references are useful for identifying circuits, but a good fuse or relay does not prove the rest of the system is healthy. See the fuse-box guide for panel locations and the official chart.

If the blower does not move air

A clogged cabin filter is one simple possibility. Ford schedules the cabin filter for replacement every 20,000 miles (32,000 km) under normal conditions. A blower motor, blower control, wiring, relay or fuse problem can create similar no-airflow symptoms.

If airflow is strong but the air is warm

This points away from a blocked cabin filter and toward the refrigeration or climate-control side. Possible causes can include a refrigerant leak, compressor/clutch issue, sensor/control fault or an air-mixing problem. A proper diagnosis checks system commands and refrigerant pressures rather than adding refrigerant by guesswork.

If cooling fades while stopped

The condenser needs airflow. At road speed, vehicle movement provides a lot of that airflow; at idle, the electric cooling fan is more important. If cooling is noticeably better while moving, the cooling-fan fuse, relay and symptom guide is worth reading.

Important: Ford warns that the A/C refrigerant system contains refrigerant under high pressure and says qualified personnel should service it. I do not recommend opening, charging, venting or bypassing the refrigerant system as a DIY troubleshooting step.
