2017 Ford Escape Backup Camera Not Working
A failed backup-camera image can look like one problem even though several different parts are involved: the camera on the liftgate, power and wiring, the display/SYNC system, reverse-lamp operation and the vehicle's parking-aid electronics. The symptom is the best place to start.
Match the symptom first
What Ford says about normal camera operation
The camera should display the area behind the Escape when the transmission is placed in reverse. Ford notes several situations where the image may not work correctly or may look different:
- The liftgate is open.
- Mud, water or debris is blocking the camera lens.
- One or both reverse lamps are not operating in dark conditions.
- The rear of the vehicle has been hit or damaged and the camera is no longer aligned correctly.
- Active guidelines may temporarily disappear after the battery has been disconnected; Ford says they can return after the vehicle is driven a short distance.
Where is the backup camera fuse?
In the North American 2017 Escape owner's manual, the luggage-compartment fuse panel lists F29, 5A for the blind-spot detection system and the rear-view camera with park assist. That panel is separate from the under-hood power-distribution box.

Black screen, blue screen or no image in reverse
If the display changes when reverse is selected but there is no usable picture, the fault can be different from a screen that never changes at all. A technician may need to check whether the camera is receiving power and whether the video/data path between the liftgate and display is intact.
On an older hatchback or SUV, wiring that passes between the body and liftgate also lives in a high-movement area. If the concern changes when the liftgate moves, or appeared after rear-body or liftgate work, mention that history when the vehicle is diagnosed.
If the SYNC screen is frozen too
A frozen, rebooting or unresponsive SYNC display can make a working camera look like a camera failure. Before buying a camera, compare the symptoms with the 2017 Escape SYNC and radio reset guide. Ford provides a system reset that does not erase stored devices and a separate master reset that does erase personal settings.
If the picture is blurry or hard to see
Ford specifically calls out mud, water and debris on the camera lens. A dirty lens is one of the few checks that is both simple and easy to overlook. Clean it gently with a soft lint-free cloth and a non-abrasive cleaner. If the image remains distorted after the lens is clean, physical damage or internal camera trouble becomes more plausible.
Missing or strange camera guidelines
The 2017 Escape can show active guidelines, fixed guidelines and a centerline. Ford notes that active guidelines may not function immediately after a battery disconnect. If the picture itself is normal but only the lines are missing, that points the investigation in a different direction than a completely dead camera.
If the rear of the vehicle has been hit, even lightly, Ford also notes that camera alignment can be affected. A crooked image or guidelines that no longer line up with the vehicle deserves an alignment and mounting check.
Camera problem or parking-sensor problem?
The camera and the ultrasonic parking sensors are related driver aids, but they are not the same hardware. If the video image is normal but the audible rear parking aid is not working, that points away from the camera itself. If both fail at the same time, the shared electrical and module information becomes more important.

What I would record before ordering parts
- Does the display switch modes when reverse is selected?
- Is the screen black, blue, distorted or completely unchanged?
- Do the reverse lamps work?
- Are the parking sensors working normally?
- Does SYNC work normally outside reverse?
- Was the battery recently disconnected or replaced?
- Was there recent liftgate, rear-bumper or collision work?
Those details can save a lot of guessing and help separate a camera assembly problem from a fuse, harness, display or module issue.
