2017 Ford Escape EVAP Purge Valve
The EVAP system keeps fuel vapors from being released directly into the atmosphere. The purge valve is one part of that system, but it is not the only part that can turn on the check-engine light. That distinction matters because replacing a purge valve based only on a generic code description can miss a disconnected vapor line, wiring problem or another EVAP fault.
What does the purge valve do?
At the right operating conditions, the engine management system uses the purge valve to meter stored fuel vapor from the EVAP system into the engine. If the valve, its electrical control, a vapor line or another EVAP component is not behaving as expected, the powertrain control module can set a diagnostic trouble code.
Symptoms that can point toward an EVAP problem
- Check-engine light with an EVAP-related code.
- Rough running or an unusual idle under some conditions.
- Hard starting or odd behavior after refueling.
- Fuel-vapor smell, which should be investigated promptly.
- A code that returns after being cleared.
None of those symptoms proves the purge valve is bad. A scan code identifies the system or test that failed, not automatically the part to replace.
Ford TSB 19-2171 and the 2017 Escape
Ford's bulletin applies to certain 2017-2019 Escape/MKC vehicles with 1.5L, 2.0L or 2.3L EcoBoost engines when P04F0 and/or P144C are stored. The bulletin says the cause may be loose or partly connected EVAP vapor lines, including connections around the canister-purge-valve circuit.
Ford also states that the TSB is information intended for trained professional technicians and says the procedure should not be performed by do-it-yourselfers. I am following that line here: this page explains what the bulletin means but does not reproduce the workshop repair procedure.
What about P1450?
Ford defines P1450 as Unable to Bleed Up Fuel Tank Vacuum. Ford's OBD monitor information associates it with excessive EVAP vacuum and includes a purge-valve-stuck-open check, but the code is still diagnostic information rather than an automatic instruction to replace a part. What information helps a technician?
- The exact DTCs, including pending codes.
- Whether the problem appears immediately after refueling.
- Any fuel-vapor smell.
- Whether the engine runs differently at idle.
- Whether EVAP hoses or components were recently serviced.
