2017 Ford Escape Warning Lights & Dashboard Messages Guide
A warning on a 2017 Ford Escape can range from a routine maintenance reminder to something that means you should stop driving as soon as it is safe. The useful part is not memorizing every possible message. It is knowing which system is asking for attention and how urgent the situation may be.

First: red, amber and informational messages are not equal
Engine temperature and coolant warnings
One of the most important messages Ford uses is “High Engine Temperature Stop Safely.” If the engine temperature is genuinely too high, this is not the time to keep driving to see whether it goes away.

Oil-pressure and oil-life messages
A low-oil-pressure warning is different from an oil-change reminder. Oil pressure is an engine-protection issue. Oil life is Ford's maintenance-monitoring system telling you that scheduled service is due.

Brake-system messages
Ford treats a low brake-fluid message as an immediate brake-system inspection issue. I would not reduce a brake warning to “probably just needs fluid,” because fluid level can be related to wear or a system problem that needs to be understood.
Use the brake guide for general brake symptoms and the rear brake and electronic parking brake guide for the EPB-equipped rear system.
If the parking brake itself will not apply or release, or the brake warning remains after release, use the Electronic Parking Brake Warning guide. The 2017 manual also notes that low or discharged 12V battery power can prevent EPB operation.
Transmission warnings
Ford's message set includes transmission service and over-temperature conditions. A transmission-temperature warning deserves a different response from an ordinary shift-quality complaint because heat can quickly turn into a larger problem.

Check-engine light and engine fault messages
The check-engine light is a starting point, not a diagnosis. Read the stored code before replacing parts. This site already has dedicated pages for several common owner searches:

If the check-engine light appears along with overheating, severe shaking, smoke or a major loss of power, I would treat the symptoms as more important than the code number alone.
Key, starting and remote messages
A low remote battery is usually a very different problem from the vehicle not recognizing the key at all. Ford's message set includes “Key Battery Low Replace Soon.” The 2017 remote uses a CR2032 battery in the configurations covered by Ford's North American owner information.
Use Key Fob Battery for the battery itself and Key Fob Not Working for recognition, range and keyless-entry problems. If lock/unlock works but factory remote start does not, go to Remote Start Not Working.
Tire-pressure and TPMS warnings
A low-tire-pressure warning means you should check the actual tire pressures against the placard on the vehicle. A TPMS system or sensor fault is a different issue. See the Tire Pressure & TPMS guide for the distinction.
Battery and electrical messages
Low-voltage conditions can create several symptoms at once, so I become more suspicious of battery/charging condition when unrelated electrical systems begin acting strangely together.

Door, hood and liftgate messages
An ajar message may simply mean a panel is not fully latched, but a repeated warning when everything appears closed can point to a latch or sensing issue. A liftgate problem can also affect convenience features and, on some configurations, power-liftgate operation.

Lighting messages
Lighting messages should be matched to the lamp that is actually out. The main rear tail/brake section on the North American 2017 Escape is LED, while other rear lamps use serviceable bulbs.

Parking aid, camera and sensor warnings
A sensor can be unavailable because it is blocked or because the system has a fault. Cleaning the relevant camera/sensor area may help when dirt, ice or poor visibility is the cause, but a persistent system-fault message needs proper diagnosis.

Stability, steering and safety-system warnings
ABS, stability-control, steering and restraint warnings are not areas where I would encourage random parts swapping. These systems affect vehicle control and occupant protection, and a persistent warning deserves proper diagnostic equipment and qualified inspection.
