2017 Ford Escape Transmission Fluid Type & Capacity

This is a specification page, because transmission-fluid questions are easy to get wrong when a generic chart mixes together different Ford models or different types of service. Ford's 2017 manual gives the same MERCON LV specification for the 1.5L EcoBoost, 2.0L EcoBoost and 2.5L engine listings.

Why 8.5 litres is not a normal refill amount

Ford labels the 9.0 qt (8.5 L) figure as an approximate dry-fill capacity. A transmission that is simply being serviced does not necessarily drain every passage, component and cooler circuit. That means the amount removed during a service can be substantially different from the published dry capacity.

I would not use the dry-fill number as a target for adding fluid. The correct fluid-level procedure matters much more than a total-capacity number.

Does the 2017 Escape have a transmission dipstick?

No traditional owner-service dipstick is provided. Ford's 2017 manual says the automatic transmission does not have a transmission-fluid dipstick and recommends having the fluid checked and changed at the appropriate interval by an authorized dealer.

What if the transmission is slipping or shifting slowly?

Ford specifically says the fluid level should be checked if the transmission slips, shifts slowly or shows signs of a fluid leak. Those symptoms can have several causes, so adding fluid without confirming the level is not a reliable diagnosis.

Can you use a different "low viscosity" ATF?

The important part is the specification, not a vague description on the bottle. Ford states that transmissions requiring MERCON LV should use MERCON LV and warns that using another fluid can cause transmission damage.
